Goal or Problem

Currently its very difficult to drill holes into stone tiles like granite marble or porcelain. The traditional method uses a holesaw driven by a pilot drill. This causes a lot of friction and heat plus the pilot drill is expensive to buy. In this article we remove the pilot drill and show how a diamond holesaw or core drill can be manipulated to cut a perfect hole into granite, marble and stone. And porcelain tiles, as well as ceramic tiles, glass and mirror.

Idea

Drilling holes into very hard stone like granite marble and porcelain including large format tiles is extremely difficult and expensive. To drill the perfect hole using value for money equipment follow these easy steps. 365Drills !

1) Use a guide plate or template cut out with the correct sized hole. This will replace the pilot hole. At the back of the guide plate attach rubber or silicone feet. These are available from any hardware store and are the sort of thing you find on the back of drinks coasters to stop them slipping on glass.

2) You will need an electroplated diamond holesaw, core or drill bit. These are easily available and you can search for PORSADRILL to give you some idea of what to look fore.

3) Place the diamond core hole saw or drill bit into the chuck of a standard battery operated hand drill or drill driver.

4) Push the guide plate down on to the tile. Insert the core diamond tile drill bit into the hole.

5) Start to SLOWLY drill your granite, marble or porcelain. The diamond core will grind a small pit or ridge into the stone.

6) At this point you may remove the guide plate.

7) Push the core drill bit into the ridge and you may continue to drill the hole.

8) Heat is building up into the diamond core as you bore the hole. This needs to be eliminated.

9) Find a small wash sponge. Kitchens usually have the smaller sponges. Load it with water and hold it next to the diamond core drill 365 bit.

10) Allow the water to flow from the sponge by squeezing it and letting it come into contact with the diamond core.

11) Slowly drill into the granite, marble or porcelain tile.

12) After about 3 to 4 minutes you will have your perfect hole.

Limitations and Side Effects

Drilling too fast, too hot or with too much pressure will reduce the working life of your diamond core holesaw 365Drills bit.

Diamond cores will not work in wood or metal. They ONLY work in stone.

Diamond cores, drills will only drill to a 32mm depth so perfect for kitchen granite worktops but nothing deeper
