Goal or Problem
Your favorite cocktail becomes watery if you do not drink it within certain amount of time. What is the right amount of ice to put into a cocktail glass?
Idea
The ice in a cocktail glass melts mainly because the temperatures of the glass and the ice inside level up. If you put just several ice cubes into the glass, they melt quickly. In a while, ice cubes are partially melted and there is some water in the glass. If ingredients are added at that point, the cocktail is/becomes watery from the beginning. Therefore, the temperature of the glass should be as low as possible before you start pouring ingredients into the glass.
Fill up the glass with the ice cubes up to the top. Wait for a while until some of the ice melts and brings the temperature of the glass down. Then pour off melted ice. Afterward, pour the ingredients into the glass. Having the glass cold enough and having enough ice in the glass will keep the cocktail cold and the taste fresh for the longest time.
So perhaps against "common sense", having more ice in cocktail glass keeps the drink less watery.
Limitations and Side Effects
Obviously, after some time, the content of the cocktail glass will have the same temperature as the surrounding environment. The steps above help in making this process as slow as possible.
