Getting rid of odors in a dishwasher

Idea

Next time you squeeze a lemon or a lime, do not throw away the peel. Instead, put the peel (both halves) to the cutlery basket of the dishwasher. Keep the peel in the dishwasher while filling the dishwasher and also during the cycle. Replace it after about two days. If the peel stays in the dishwasher longer it might get mildewy (this depends also on the outside temperature).

While the dishwasher is being filled, the scent from the peel is usually stronger than the odors from food remainders. During the cycle, the hot water helps carrying the natural citrus oils throughout the dishwasher, leaving it smelling fresh.
