Goal or Problem
Flowers in the vase wither after some time. While this in unavoidable, it possible to prolong the time the flowers stay fresh.
Idea
One of the reasons why the flowers in vase fade away is lack of water they absorb. While the plant is in the soil, it can absorb water via the root system. When the plant is in the vase, it soaks up water only via a small surface of the cut. The bigger the surface the more water the plant can absorb.
This idea works well for plants with woody stems, such as roses. Make several cuts along the stem at the bottom, i.e. where the plant was cut off. The cuts should be about 1.5 centimeter (1/2 inch) long. Then gently crush (e.g. with a hammer) the stem where you have just cut it. This should delay withering by several days.

It makes a difference!
After crushing the stem as described above, the Valentine rose at home lasted for more than three weeks.
