Tips for lowering dishwasher energy usage

Dishwasher uses lot of energy to heat up the water and dry the dishes with hot air. Usually, a lower program than recommended is sufficient to achieve good results, i.e. clean dishes. In my household, we use almost exclusively the quick program that washes the dishes at 35 ºC and does not have a drying step. Energy consumption of this cycle is 0.84 kWh. Energy consumption of the intensive program (70 ºC, multiple rinsing steps and a drying step) is 1.40 kWh.

How much can I expect to save by using the quick program instead of the intensive program? 1kWh of electrical energy costs about € 0.20. Let’s assume that the dishwasher runs 100 times per year (approximately twice a week).

100 x (1.40kWh - 0.84kWh) * 0.20 €/kWh = € 11.2

If you want to save a bit of money and contribute to protecting the environment, experiment with different cycles of your dishwasher. Try to find a cycle that is lower than recommended and still washes the dishes as desired.

Read also the manual for your dishwasher. There is a fair chance that it contains energy saving tips specific to your appliance.
