Idea
Some time ago my wife noticed that they installed containers for plastic waste in our town. As we are both care about the environment, we started to separate plastic waste from other waste and deposit it to the dedicated containers.
We have two trash bins. One for organic waste and one for the overall waste. The one for overall waste was then 240 liters and was emptied by garbage collectors once in two weeks. After separating the plastic waste for several months, we noticed that our bin for overall waste was about half empty every time before it got emptied. So we decided to ask the local authorities to replace our 240 liter bin by a smaller bin - just 120 liters. With a family of five, we managed to stay in that quota without any problems. The smaller bin is also cheaper. So we save money and help to reduce the pollution in the same time.
This story shows that about half of the waste that a household produces consists of plastic. Perhaps not weight-wise but certainly volume-wise. This was bit of a surprise to me. But actually it makes sense. Many products we buy (mainly food) are packaged in containers from hard plastic. After removing the content, the packing is disposed. So it occupies space in a trash bin while only air is packaged in it.
