Storing paint brushes between paint jobs in white spirit

Idea

Clean the paint brushes first. Wipe the paint into old newspaper and/or rinse the paint brushes in white spirit. Thorough rinsing is not necessary though.

For storing, use a container that you can make air proof, for example, a sealable plastic bag. Pour white spirit into the container so that when you put the paint brushes into the container, the bristles are fully immersed in the white spirit. Then seal the container. Put it on the safe place and make sure that the bristles are still fully immersed. You can leave the brushes there for several years.

Over the time, paint brushes absorb some of the white spirit in the container. Before the next paint job, make sure that you soak well the white spirit out of the bristles.

Limitations and Side Effects

• White spirit slowly dissolves thin plastic bags. In several months you may find out that the white spirit slowly leaks out of the plastic bag. Therefore, do not use plastic bags made out of thin plastic.
• You can put more brushes into the same container. However, do not mix paint brushes with remainders of different colors in one container.
