Tips for making green tea in the office

No votes yet

Goal or Problem

Green tea lovers know that for the best taste, the green tea needs to be brewed in water with temperature of about 80 ºC (175 ºF). This is quite tricky to achieve in an office environment.

One typical way of doing this is to boil the water and then wait for certain amount of time until the temperature drops. But who has time to sit with a stop watch next to a mug with hot water in a busy office environment?

Idea

Most coffee machines in offices serve also hot water. The temperature of the water is often close to 80 ºC (175 ºF). This is not rule that applies to all coffee machines though. If you want to find out, talk to the person who maintains the coffee machine. They should be able to tell you straight away what the temperature of the hot water in the coffee machine is.

Comments

Espresso machines, mugs, etc.

Espresso machines, which also serve hot water, serve it at lower temperatures than 100 ºC.

The water temperature also depends on a mug, into which the hot/boiling water is poured. The mug absorbs some part of the heat. Thus the temperature may easily drop to 85 ºC in the first couple of seconds.

If you use a mug to brew your tea and pour in water from a coffee or espresso machine, it is very likely that it is about 80 - 85 ºC hot and therefore more suitable for brewing green tea than black tea.
